2025 Rivian EDV 700 Commercial EV Flatbed Tow from Eloy to Tucson, AZ Case Study
Service Overview
A commercial electric vehicle that cannot be placed in neutral requires additional planning before it can be loaded and transported.
Arizona Towing & Recovery Services was dispatched for a 2025 Rivian EDV 700 that had run out of charge near Eloy, Arizona. The vehicle was listed at approximately 6,000 pounds with a 9,500-pound GVWR, could not be placed in neutral, and had rear parking brakes that could not be disengaged.
Steve Johnson responded with the 2023 International flatbed. The vehicle-specific towing instructions called for a flatbed at least 21 feet long, nylon straps, an 8-point tie-down system, and skates or dollies to help reposition the disabled vehicle. After loading and securement, the Rivian was transported from Eloy to Tucson.
Steve handled the specialized positioning, loading, securement and transport of the disabled commercial EV.
The International provided the full flatbed platform required for the Rivian EDV and allowed the crew to use the specified soft-loading and securement methods.
What Made This Tow Different
The main challenge was getting a commercial EV onto the flatbed when it could not be placed in neutral and its rear parking brakes could not be released. The Rivian’s towing instructions also required specific loading and securement methods. Skates or dollies were needed at the rear, soft nylon equipment was specified for loading, and conventional J-hooks could not be attached to the control arms. The vehicle also had to be secured with an 8-point tie-down system before transport.
Loading a Commercial EV With the Rear Parking Brakes Engaged
Because the rear wheels could not roll normally, the loading setup had to account for that resistance while following the vehicle-specific attachment and securement requirements.
How We Completed the Specialized Rivian Tow
Confirming the Vehicle Condition & Tow Requirements
Before loading began, the vehicle’s condition and towing requirements had to be confirmed. The Rivian was out of charge, could not be placed in neutral, and its rear parking brakes could not be disengaged.
The EDV was listed at approximately 6,000 pounds curb weight with a 9,500-pound GVWR, and the service instructions required a flatbed at least 21 feet long.
Preparing the Flatbed & Specialized Loading Equipment
Steve responded with the 2023 International flatbed and the equipment specified for the disabled Rivian. Because the rear parking brakes remained engaged, the loading setup needed to account for wheels that could not roll normally.
The towing instructions called for a flatbed at least 21 feet long, nylon straps, an 8-point tie-down system, and skates or dollies for repositioning the vehicle.
Positioning the Rivian With the Rear Parking Brakes Engaged
The Rivian could not be placed in neutral, and the rear parking brakes remained engaged. That meant the EDV could not simply be rolled or pulled normally onto the flatbed.
Skates or dollies were used at the rear as part of the loading setup, allowing the disabled vehicle to be repositioned onto the flatbed while accounting for the locked rear wheels.
Soft-Strap Loading & Eight-Point Securement
The Rivian’s towing instructions also specified how the vehicle could be attached during loading. Nylon V-bridles or endless loops were to be routed through the front lower control-arm areas rather than using conventional J-hooks.
J-hooks were not to be used on the front or rear control arms, and the EDV was not to be loaded backward because of the risk of damage. Once the vehicle was positioned on the flatbed, it was secured using the required 8-point tie-down setup before transport.
Soft loading equipment was specified for the front lower control-arm areas rather than conventional J-hook attachment.
The commercial EV was secured for full-platform transport before leaving the pickup location.
Following the vehicle-specific attachment instructions was an important part of the tow. The loading method had to account for both the Rivian’s disabled condition and the restrictions on where towing equipment could be attached.
Transporting the Rivian from Eloy to Tucson
Once the Rivian was fully positioned and secured on the flatbed, Steve transported the commercial EV from the Eloy area to its destination in Tucson.
The delivery instructions called for the disabled EDV to be left at an available charger. After arriving in Tucson, the vehicle was positioned in the designated charging area so it was left where the receiving location had requested.
Specialized Commercial EV Tow Completed in Tucson
The 2025 Rivian EDV 700 was successfully transported from Eloy to Tucson after being loaded despite its inability to roll normally. The job required the appropriate flatbed, skates or dollies for rear-wheel positioning, soft loading equipment, and an 8-point securement system to account for the vehicle’s disabled condition and specific towing requirements.
The commercial EV was delivered to the requested charging area in Tucson, completing the transport from its breakdown location near Eloy.
